The latest injury to Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III was the big news of the week for the local pro football team in the nation’s capital until this afternoon. With their November electoral wipeout getting closer by the hour, leave it to the Democrats to engage in more racial demagoguery to muster their increasingly dwindling base. Taking a break from the incessant whining at the NFL and harassing Commissioner Roger Goodell over domestic violence incidents involving big name players, the jackass party is back on the attack over the team’s nickname. Again!
Senator Maria Cantwell – the pride of Washington State – today announced that she would be introducing a bill to strip the league of the tax exempt status that it enjoys unless the team changes names. As has already been noted the name “Redskins” has been used by the franchise ever since it relocated to Washington from Beantown back in 1937 where it was named the Boston Redskins. In the ongoing series of the type of distractions and dog and pony shows that a political party on life support is prone to roll out this is the proverbial gift that keeps on giving.
According to a story in the Washington Post entitled “Lawmaker to introduce bill to end NFL’s tax-exempt status because of Redskins name”:
Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) announced Tuesday that she will introduce legislation to eliminate the NFL’s tax-exempt status because of its refusal to address the name of the Washington Redskins.
Flanked by several tribal chiefs, Cantwell, who is the former chair of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, condemned the team’s name as a slur against Native Americans.
“The NFL needs to join the rest of Americans in the 21st century,” she said. “It is about right and wrong.”
Cantwell made her remarks at a press conference called by a coalition of Native American and social justice groups leading the campaign against the Redskins’ name.
The group, Change the Mascot, which includes the National Congress of American Indians and the Oneida Indian Nation, is calling on the owners of the 31 other NFL teams to force fellow owner Dan Snyder to change the team’s moniker.
I personally don’t like Redskins owner Daniel Snyder one bit. In my opinion he is an arrogant little prick and the biggest asshole among NFL owners east of Jerry Jones. I do however admire his ongoing refusal to buckle under to Democrat backed extortion tactics over the team name. Despite the silly press conference with those few Native Americans who she trotted out as stage props, he is going to tell her to go and pound sand. I hate to stoop to the level of attacking the way that a person looks but the last time that I saw a face like Cantwell’s it was on a totem pole.
The threatening of the league with revocation of the tax exemption is just an empty threat and I would not want to be the one who tangles with the NFL’s army of lawyers and deep-pocketed owners. She may not have to worry about running for reelection this year but pissing off people the likes of who she is picking a fight with is a recipe for a well-funded challenger as well as the best scorn and attack ads that money can buy. However, she is doing a damned fine job of making an ass out of herself on her own with stunts like this.
Good God, no wonder everything is falling apart if this crap is what passes for a matter of great national importance and it spits on the very concept of democracy itself.
