By the time that the results were tallied the foul-mouthed Rahm Emanuel was probably too stunned to even drop an F bomb.  The former Clinton and Obama administration hatchet man turned Chicago Mayor failed to garner the fifty percent necessary to avoid a runoff in his bid for reelection. It was expected to be a cakewalk and “Rahmbo” had the backing of big corporations and Wall Street banksters but it wasn’t enough. Emperor Barack Obama even paid a visit last week to stump for Emanuel (Slick Willie didn’t show) but it was a bite-ass cold morning on Wednesday in the Windy City for the sitting mayor.

Reuters reports on the mayoral race in a story entitled “In surprise result, Chicago’s Mayor Emanuel faces election run-off”:

In a surprise result that showed the limits of a big-money campaign, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel failed to get more than 50 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election, and must face a run-off against second-place finisher Jesus “Chuy” Garcia in April.

The setback for Emanuel, 55, came despite a visit to Chicago last week from President Barack Obama, whom Emanuel served as chief of staff.

With $6 million in his war chest at year end even after spending $4.7 million in the fourth quarter, Emanuel hugely outspent four opponents in his race for a second term as head of the nation’s third-largest city.

The powerful Democrat got millions of dollars from campaign donors, including Hollywood directors and hedge fund executives, plus Obama’s support.

But it wasn’t enough to fend off the mild-mannered Garcia, a Cook County commissioner and progressive Democrat with a paltry campaign fund. Garcia held a low public profile before he jumped into the race last October after the teacher’s union president, Karen Lewis, backed away after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

The run-off election against Garcia will be held on April 7.

It was a stunning reversal of fortune for Emanuel given his name recognition as well as an array of highly powerful friends and allies but yet another sigh that Americans are getting fed up with business as usual. Under Emanuel’s reign Chicago area crime rates have become a national embarrassment and he has managed to alienate many of the traditional Democrat constituents with his abrasive demeanor and heavy hand.

It also probably didn’t help his cause much that a story just was broken by The Guardian about how the Chicago Police Department is operating a “black site” that is something straight out of the Stalin era Soviet Union.  According to the expose, “The disappeared: Chicago police detain Americans at abuse-laden ‘black site’”:

The Chicago police department operates an off-the-books interrogation compound, rendering Americans unable to be found by family or attorneys while locked inside what lawyers say is the domestic equivalent of a CIA black site.

The facility, a nondescript warehouse on Chicago’s west side known as Homan Square, has long been the scene of secretive work by special police units. Interviews with local attorneys and one protester who spent the better part of a day shackled in Homan Square describe operations that deny access to basic constitutional rights.

Alleged police practices at Homan Square, according to those familiar with the facility who spoke out to the Guardian after its investigation into Chicago police abuse, include:

Keeping arrestees out of official booking databases.

Beating by police, resulting in head wounds.

Shackling for prolonged periods.

Denying attorneys access to the “secure” facility.

Holding people without legal counsel for between 12 and 24 hours, including people as young as 15.

At least one man was found unresponsive in a Homan Square “interview room” and later pronounced dead.

Despite the extreme amount of criminality in Chicago it just is not compatible with American values that such a facility exists and shows Mr. Emanuel’s contempt for this country and the Constitution. It would be easy to simply round up political opponents and ‘reeducate’ them as to the proper way of doing things during a few sessions at Honan Square. Emanuel has much in common with his former boss, the America hating Barry who has done more to transform this country into a corrupt, lawless banana republic than anyone in our history.

The runoff will take place on April 7, if you already thought that Rahm Emanuel was a dirty rotten bastard who would do anything to hold onto power you haven’t seen anything yet.
