Humiliated and beaten like an old dog with mange, the honorable John Boehner hit the Sunday morning McNews show circuit and denied that he has an agreement with the Democrats over Homeland Security funding. The Republican Speaker of the House appeared on the CBS venue Face the Nation to rebut the vicious rumors of the deal with the devil as well as knock down rumblings of a conservative insurrection to oust him from his “leadership” position. As a politician, Boehner is an all-pro bullshit artist and while he desperately tries to shore up support the clock is ticking towards Friday when DHS funding will run out. It would be hard to see him being able to punt again after last week so now it’s crunch time and Boehner is back on offense.
According to the Reuters story “Boehner defends his U.S. House leadership amid conservative unrest”:
U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, having suffered an embarrassing rebuke at the hands of conservatives in his own party, played down any risk to his continuing leadership on Sunday, saying disagreements with fellow Republicans were merely over strategy, not goals.
Asked if he could lead the House, Boehner said, “I think so. I’m not going to suggest it’s easy, because it’s not.”
The House narrowly averted a shutdown of funding to the Department of Homeland Security on Friday after Boehner failed to rein in conservative Republicans insistent upon tying the issue to blocking President Barack Obama’s move to shield millions of illegal immigrants from deportation.
“We do have some members who disagree from time to time over the tactics that we decide to employ. But remember that Republicans are united in this idea that the president has far exceeded his constitutional authority,” he said in an interview on the CBS program “Face the Nation.”
Boehner on Jan. 6 narrowly won a third term as speaker, surviving a stiff challenge from 25 conservative Republicans that signaled a possible growing split within the party as it assumed full control of Congress. A faction of dissident House Republicans oppose him because they say he has done too little to cut spending and fight Obama’s immigration and healthcare policies.
Boehner’s lieutenants also hit the propaganda shows with Steve Scalise, the House Majority Whip making the orange hued Speaker’s case on Fox News Sunday while Ohioan Jim Jordan held forth on CNN’s State of the Union. Conservatives are however getting restive after turning out in force back in November and then watching the leadersheep in the new Republican controlled congress get punked time and again by Obama and the Dems. Boehner is at some point going to have to run up the white flag because one week stopgap bills – while beloved by the media – are not the way to get the job done when it comes to having to govern.
Again, it must be emphasized that the entire fiasco is of Boehner’s own making when he chose to go along with breaking out Homeland Security from funding the rest of the government back in December. While Boehner may be about as indestructible as a cockroach and if he manages to survive the DHS debacle he is still going to have to put up or shut up on his bold talk about taking his drinking buddy Barry to the woodshed. Because if he doesn’t do something the movement to depose him as Speaker is only going to get larger and much more serious.
