There should be no argument that this new Congress is already among the most dysfunctional ever. Scant months after a landslide Republican win in the 2014 mid-term elections the future was as bright as in the good old days of Ronald Reagan for the GOP and they had the wind at their backs. But then a cascading series of disasters, horrific strategy, bad public relations and political losses to Emperor Barack Obama happened and the new majority is in disarray. Now members of the new Republican Congress are starting to turn on each other as well.
Representative Peter King of Long Island, a chubby little demagogue who is a Sunday morning McNews show darling has drawn attention for blasting the GOP over the Homeland Security funding fiasco. King, who never misses an opportunity to whip out the terrorism card for his own self-promotion, showed up at a big fire fighters meeting and officially began his 2016 reelection campaign. Using first responders as props is as good a political trick as invoking Jesus, Old Glory and the children for the cynical career tax payer funded freeloaders and King is a master at it.
According to a story from Politico entitled “At firefighters meeting, Peter King blasts fellow GOPers”:
Rep. Peter King, a New York Republican and frequent critic of his own party, on Tuesday tore into fellow Republicans who pledge support for firefighters but would have allowed a shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.
His remarks, which also served as an implicit jab against several likely GOP presidential contenders, came in front of a gathering of the International Association of Firefighters.
King, a longtime champion of firefighters’ and police unions who is also eyeing a White House run, received a warm reception as he slammed Republicans who supported linking DHS funding to an attempt to repeal President Barack Obama’s executive orders on immigration.
“I find it really hypocritical to have people come before you, say, ‘I stand with the firefighters, We have to be with you,’ and then they don’t vote to fund the Department of Homeland Security,” King said.
“What do they think they’re going to do? You guys can win without the equipment? Without the training? Without the funding? We’re asking you to perform a federal obligation when you’re defending this country against terrorism. And if that’s the case, no member of the House, no member of the Senate should ever, ever deny you the funding for you to do your job.”
King singled out possible presidential candidates Ted Cruz and Rand Paul for exposing the country to – ho hum – a terrorist attack. The porcine Congressman, the reigning Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee is ironically no stranger to terrorism. Peter King himself was for a long time an ardent supporter ofactual terrorists, notably the Irish Republican Army (IRA) that murdered innocent women and children. He counts former terrorist Gerry Adams of the Irish Sinn Fein party among his very good friends.
Besides his obvious hypocrisy, King has never accused of being a team player and the early sniping so soon after that landmark election bodes poorly for an opposition party that despite it’s bravado is destined to play foot stool for Obama. As the saying goes, a house divided against itself cannot stand.
The good news is that Peter King’s seat in New York’s 2nd Congressional District is up for reelection in November 2016. If conservatives really want change then they are going to have to do more than just vote in more Republicans and then watch the establishment leadership and it’s cronies continue to lord it over Congress. The real solution is voting guys like Peter King out of office. While it’s tough, the big boys can indeed be toppled – look what happened to Eric Cantor . The only way to get about pushing a conservative agenda is to elect real conservatives to Congress.
