As the old saying goes, even a broken clock is right twice a day and none other than old Jimmy Carter is proof of that. The mummified former U.S. President who is widely regarded as one of the worst leaders of the modern era hit the nail on the head when he denounced the current state of the political system as a corrupt oligarchy. It is the dirty secret that must be guarded at all costs that our once great democracy is essentially on life support thanks to the takeover of Washington and our elected ‘leaders’ by big money special interests. It has become even more acute in the Obama era with the White House and the rotten to the core Justice Department subsidizing Wall Street banksters at the expense of ordinary Americans. It is also the number one reason why billionaire Donald Trump is blowing away the competition in the polls – he has his own money and can’t be bought. He may also be the last chance that we have.

Mr. Carter, who is mocked and reviled by even Democrats these days, made his comments during an interview with liberal radio host Thom Hartmann. As reported by the conservative website Breitbart News in the story entitled “Carter: US Political System Oligarchy With ‘Unlimited Bribery’”:

Last week on the “The Thom Hartmann Program,” former President Jimmy Carter decried America’s political system as an “oligarchy with unlimited political bribery.”

Carter said, “It violates the essence of what made America a great country in its political system. Now it is just an oligarchy with unlimited political bribery being the essence of getting the nomination for president or elected president. And the same thing applies to U.S. senators and congress members. Now we’ve seen a complete subversion of our political system as a payoff to major contributors, who want and expect and sometimes get favors for themselves after the election is over.”

He added, “It is going to take a horrible disgraceful series of acts that turns the public against it, and maybe even the Congress and Supreme Court, that would be the main thing. But at the present time, the incumbents, Democrats and Republicans look upon this unlimited money as a great benefit to themselves. Because somebody who already is in Congress has a lot more to sell to an avid contributor than someone who is just a challenger. It benefits both parties.”

It’s pretty hard to argue with the peanut man on this particular point, especially with establishment friendly candidates for both parties traversing the county to audition for the high-rollers, be they the Koch Brothers, George Soros or any of the other billionaires looking for a return on their investment. The system is badly broken right now, how else can you explain the inevitable Godzilla vs. Megalon matchup of “Jeb!” vs. Hillary for all the marbles next November. Trump and to a lesser degree Bernie Sanders are enjoying early success exactly because of the way that the status quo has been able to rig the game time after time. I really don’t have much good to say about old Jimmy who should know a thing or two about oligarchs considering his history with the Rockefellers but he is correct on this one.
