Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson has had a rough couple of weeks. The same media that has built him up as a more palatable (and controllable) alternative to Donald Trump is now working to tear him down. The Donald has been more resilient than the establishment ever imagined which means that Dr. Carson has is about ready to pass his sell by date. Fresh off of being relentlessly pounded over his comments about the incompatibility between the Constitution and a Muslim president, he is now under fire over his response to the Oregon school shooting.
Carson first drew the ire of the media elite by suggesting that he would have implored Umpqua Community College students to attack the shooter in order to overwhelm him. It was a stunningly heretical statement in a land where the populace has been turned into cowardly sheep and jellyfish since the 9/11 attacks and therefore earned him the scorn of the opinion makers. Never mind that the strategy seemed to work pretty well at Omaha Beach and was critical to winning the big one.
But the real firestorm came down on Carson when during an interview with CNN’s celebrity millionaire former AIPAC propagandist Wolf Blitzer when he was baited into weighing in on whether being armed would have saved the Jews from the Holocaust. Time Magazine online reports on the Blitzer-Carson interview in the article “Ben Carson Says Holocaust Would Have Been ‘Greatly Diminished’ if Jews Had Guns”:
Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that the Holocaust would have been “greatly diminished” had Jewish people in Europe been armed with guns.
“I think the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed,” Carson said. “I’m telling you there is a reason these dictatorial people take guns first.”
Carson also partly blames the horror of the Holocaust on Nazi gun control laws in his latest book, A Perfect Union, but his statements Thursday, along with many others he’s made this week on guns, were swiftly attacked.
According to ABC News, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said Carson’s statements were “historically inaccurate.”
“The small number of personal firearms available to Germany’s Jews in 1938 could in no way have stopped the totalitarian power of the Nazi German state,” said ADL national director Jonathan Greenblatt.
The Jewish Anti-Defamation League rapidly condemned Carson for his remarks and the media swarmed like sharks after fresh chum. Dr. Carson has refused to back down though despite the possibility of alienating one of the country’s top Jewish organizations. This could end up costing him politically down the line as the GOP field begins to thin out and if the establishment manages to euthanize or at least erode the Trump menace.
While Carson is absolutely correct that an armed citizenry could have served as a deterrent to Hitler’s horrors, he is talking out of his ass on this one because for it to have done so it would have had to have occurred years earlier – like busting a cap in Hitler’s crazy ass around the time of the failed beer hall putsch. By the time that the roundup of the Jews actually began, the Nazis were a military juggernaut and Germany was a full blown police state. Mass surveillance, a secret police force, a propaganda machine and a cowed populace chock a block with rats and snitches allowed for the persecution and mass-murder of the Jews.
By the way, all of these elements are now present in the United States of America or as it is so often referred to – the Homeland or in it’s original German “Heimat”. It would be far more helpful to all Americans if Carson were to expand upon his Nazi Germany analogies to point out those very important facts because it could happen here.
