With the politically inept Jeb! continuing to struggle to gain traction in the race for the GOP nomination some are turning to the photogenic empty suit Marco Rubio as the best hope to represent the party in 2016. The ongoing inability to slay Trumpzilla has befuddled the party establishment, vexed the so-called professionals and pissed off the plutocrats who own every candidate except the Donald. It has not been a good four months for the oligarchy which has watched in horror as the billionaire outsider has dominated media coverage (free for him), put a stranglehold on polls and pissed on their happy parade. It looks as though despite Bush III having all of the really important constituencies locked up (Wall Street, Big Oil, defense contractors and corporate America among others) that those with the deep pockets who want favors in return for their support are starting to shift towards the callow and opportunistic Rubio. Most prominent of the big money guys looking to back the “Kennedyesque” Rubio is billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson.

Politico reports on Rubio’s likely winning of the Adelson lottery in the story “Sheldon Adelson warms to Marco Rubio”:

Sheldon Adelson, one of the Republican Party’s most sought-after contributors, is leaning increasingly toward supporting Marco Rubio — and the Florida senator is racing to win the backing of other uncommitted megadonors who have the potential to direct tens of millions of dollars his way and alter the contours of the Republican primary fight.

Last week, during a campaign swing through Las Vegas, Rubio held a meeting in Adelson’s offices at the Venetian Las Vegas, one of a number of five-star luxury casinos the billionaire mogul owns around the world. Adelson, seated at the head of his conference table, heaped praise on Rubio’s performance while he discussed the dynamics of the 2016 race. Those briefed on the meeting described it as short but said it had an air of importance, with the two joined by Rubio’s campaign manager, Terry Sullivan, and a pair of senior Adelson advisers, Rob Goldstein and Patrick Dumont.

AND

Rubio and Adelson have grown increasingly close, with the senator phoning the billionaire several times a month to provide in-depth updates on the state of his campaign. The two men also have detailed policy discussions, especially about international affairs and Israel — the latter a cause near and dear to the mogul. Adelson has long looked favorably on Rubio, a fellow son of immigrants. Two people familiar with his thinking said he has become increasingly confident in the senator’s political skills and believes he is the kind of fresh face the Republican Party needs in 2016. (An Adelson spokesman declined to comment.)

Mr. Adelson would be investing his money wisely in the weaselly Rubio, a flip-flopping, amnesty supporting lover of the police state and a man who has long been a favorite of the neocons for his ability to be manipulated into leading America into more foreign wars. Donald Trump had it nailed when he tweeted that young Marco would be a “perfect little puppet”:

While Chico Rubio may be the apple of Adelson’s eye in 2016 the man has made bad bets in the past, he was after all the primary backer of Newt Gingrich’s doomed presidential campaign. But Adelson didn’t get rich beyond the wildest dreams of King Midas for nothing, he knows damned well that Rubio could be his little lottery ticket if things break just right.
