After cynically embracing the Democrats’ phony “war on women” meme in order to tear down their own front-runner, it didn’t take long for establishment Republicans to get hoisted upon their own petard. Donald Trump’s slip of the tongue that women should be punished for seeking illegal abortions was rapidly pounced on by Queen Hillary who slammed all Republicans for being sexist pigs. Gender politics is the most kickass club in the bag for Team Clinton in this most critical election year and when the GOP elite and their mercenary media decided to use it for their own purposes they then exposed themselves to having it used right back on them by the Democrats.
Just imagine all of the condemnations of the GOP and Trump turning up in Hillary attack ads from now until November. While the nuking of Trump has been at least partially justified by the big wigs as necessary to save the down ticket candidates it may backfire badly – just like all the rest of their brilliant ideas have. This is going to be particularly painful if efforts to steal the nomination from the Donald at this summer’s brokered convention are successful because given the defections the GOP is going to need every vote it can get to save the Senate.
As reported by CNN “Clinton slams Trump abortion comments, says: ‘The Republicans all line up together'”:
Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton pounced on Donald Trump’s comment Wednesday on MSNBC that abortion should be banned and women who receive one should should face “some form of punishment,” seeking to tie it the entire GOP field.
Hours later, Trump reversed his initial position — criticized as extreme by both supporters and opponents of abortion rights — saying only the doctors should be held liable.
“The Republicans all line up together,” Clinton said in an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper.
“Now maybe they aren’t quite as open about it as Donald Trump was earlier today, but they all have the same position,” she said, noting anti-abortion positions taken by both John Kasich and Ted Cruz. “If you make abortion a crime — you make it illegal — then you make women and doctors criminals.”
“Why is it, I ask myself, Republicans want limited government, except when it comes to women’s health?” she said.
Many Trump’s critics have sought to paint him as hostile to women, and Clinton said she largely agreed with that assessment.
The unspoken golden rule in politics is to never give an opponent the knife that they will use to cut your throat with and short-sighted Republicans have presented Mrs. Clinton with a razor sharp broadsword. The ceaseless attacks on Trump over his alleged misogyny have by some early indications had the desired effect – some polls show him trailing badly in the RNC firewall state of Wisconsin. By borrowing from the Team Hillary attack playbook the GOP elite have done exactly that and they had best be prepared to reap the whirlwind.
