Poor persecuted Heidi Cruz may be off her meds again. In a slip of the tongue that couldn’t come at a worse time, Mrs. Cruz referred to her husband as an “immigrant”. Tricky Ted is already plagued by authenticity problems and the reputation that he has a proclivity for prevarication but he has thus far managed to escape scrutiny over his Canadian birth. While Cruz is having a difficult enough time in the state that he absolutely has to win in order to keep his establishment backed bid to topple Trump at a brokered convention alive, he was wounded by friendly fire over the weekend. While stumping for her hubby in Indiana, Heidi dropped the grenade and the damage could prove to be fatal.
Trump has pounced on hapless Heidi’s gaffe to seal the deal in the Hoosier State. As reported by the Washington Post in the story “Trump pounces on Heidi Cruz’s ‘immigrant’ flub”:
Donald Trump returned to one of his favorite subjects, the Canadian birth of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), at an afternoon rally inside the city’s largest sports arena. His cue came from the senator’s wife, Heidi, who tripped over a word at a Saturday GOP presidential campaign rally and appeared to say that her husband was an immigrant.
“Heidi Cruz — nice woman,” Trump began. “She said this one: ‘My husband’s an immigrant!’ He’s an immigrant! That’s what I’ve been trying to say!’ ”
The line got laughs, and Trump seemed to find voters in the crowd who knew what he was talking about. On Saturday, while covering Heidi Cruz’s campaign stops around Indiana, Washington Examiner reporter Byron York heard a hiccup in her patter about her husband’s appeal.
“Do you know that Ted has been winning the millennial vote in state after state?” Heidi Cruz said. “He’s been winning the women’s vote in state after state. Ted is an immigrant. He is Hispanic. He can unify this party.”
The Cruz campaign quickly clarified that Heidi Cruz meant to say that her husband’s father is an immigrant, a point Ted Cruz often makes when asked how he can win Latino votes. But Trump preferred the uncorrected version.
“She was maybe trying to put a Latin turn on it,” Trump said. “He was born in Canada, folks!”
Mr. Cruz will likely try to spin this as just more of Trump’s picking on a poor defenseless female – his shrill tone increasingly resembles a Democrat trying to sell the phony war on women – but people likely won’t fall for the same crap twice. Heidi’s bumble is absolutely the last thing that Ted needed and not even Carly is going to be able to save him this time.
Polls show that Trump continues to pull away from Cruz in Indiana, the primary will be held tomorrow.
