The celebrated retired general David Petraeus penned an oped for the Washington Post slamming Donald Trump as an anti-Muslim bigot and terrorist enabler. Petraeus never actually mentioned the GOP nominee in waiting by name but it isn’t exactly rocket surgery to know who he is referring to and it IS the WAPO after all. The paper is now transitioning to an information warfare arm of the Hillary Clinton campaign and it’s apropos that Petraeus would be rolled out to fire away at Trump. Derisively referred to as an “ass kissing little chickenshit” by then boss Admiral William Fallon, King David has long been idolized by the media and the McCain-Graham peanut gallery in Congress.
The Hill reports “Petraeus blasts politicians spreading ‘anti-Muslim bigotry'”:
Former CIA Director David Petraeus on Friday called out politicians who are spreading “anti-Muslim bigotry” in a Washington Post op-ed.
Petraeus wrote that he was concerned about “proposals from various quarters for blanket discrimination against people on the basis of their religion,” an implicit shot at presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, who has called for a ban on Muslims entering the country.
“Some justify these measures as necessary to keep us safe — dismissing any criticism as ‘political correctness,’ ” Petraeus wrote. “Others play down such divisive rhetoric as the excesses of political campaigns here and in Europe, which will fade away after the elections are over.
fear that neither is true; in fact, the ramifications of such rhetoric could be very harmful — and lasting.”
The former CIA director blasted such proposals as “toxic,” arguing that they play into the plans of terrorist groups trying to rally Muslims against the United States and other Western nations.
“Such statements directly undermine our ability to defeat Islamist extremists by alienating and undermining the allies whose help we most need to win this fight: namely, Muslims,” he continued, noting that Muslim allies were essential to war efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
“I fear that those who demonize and denigrate Islam make it more likely that it will be our own men and women who ultimately have to shoulder more of this fight — at greater cost in dollars and lives.”
Though the column does not specifically call out the billionaire political insurgent, Petraeus appears to be taking direct aim at Trump’s proposal to temporarily ban some Muslims from entering the country as well as other statementside by the man who shook Washington.
Petraeus certainly has an interesting take on what constitutes a threat to national security and Trump’s cautionary idea of more carefully screening Muslims coming into the U.S. in the age of ISIS seems far more prudent than bigoted. On the other hand, spilling classified information as pillow talk to a lover during an adulterous rendezvous doesn’t merit much concern to the one time CIA Director when it comes to defending America.
Before his tawdry affair with biographer Paula Broadwell clipped his wings, Petraeus was the toast of the town if not the country. He was aso good at working the media as he was with his counter insurgent strategy and was more than once mentioned as possible presidential material. Mr. Petraeus is a made man of the establishment and his slap on the wrist over the Broadwell fiasco is proof of his status. He landed on his feet rather nicely and serves as another well known personality who can will do his duty in the war on Trump.
