One of the names that keeps coming up as a last ditch third party effort to keep Donald Trump out of the White House continues is Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse. Despite Sasse’s only becoming a member of the U.S. Senate during the wave election that turned into the great betrayal of November 2014 and his lack of any sort of a record that he can hang his hat on he has been promoted by the National Review as well as hotly pursued by the Mitt Romney-William Kristol led pack of saboteurs to run against Trump. But voters in the Cornhusker State aren’t stupid, they may have elected a weasel but by all indications are already having buyer’s remorse.
On Saturday Nebraska state Republicans let the upstart know exactly how they feel about his alliance with the Never Trump dead-enders. Breitbart News reports that “Nebraska GOP Convention Humiliates Ben Sasse with Crushing 400 to 8 Reprimand”:
Delegates to the State Republican Convention in Nebraska dealt a near unanimous reprimand to Sen. Ben Sasse on Saturday for his outspoken support for the “Never Trump” effort designed to deny presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump the presidency in November.
Sen. Ben Sasse’s reprimand passed by a voice vote, which a reporter at the event said was at least 400 to 8.
“It was a lopsided vote. The ‘ayes’ in the room of more than 400 had an audible win. Only about six or eight yelled ‘nay,’” Robynn Tysver, staff writer for the Omaha World-Herald, tweeted from the event as it happened.
“[T]he Nebraska freshman found himself rebuked Saturday by party loyalists upset at his call for a third candidate to arise and give conservatives such as himself an alternative to Donald Trump in the fall election,” the hometown World-Herald reported of Sasse’s Saturday debacle.
Not only did “[d]elegates at the State Republican Convention overwhelmingly [pass the] resolution opposing Sasse’s call for a third candidate” in the voice vote, delegates doubled down in their support of Trump as the presumptive nominee.
“They roundly rejected a counterresolution that sought to condemn the presumptive GOP presidential nominee for making ‘degrading’ comments toward women and minorities,” the World-Herald reported.
It was a huge hometown comeuppance for the young Nebraska senator who easily won his first political race in 2014.
A Washington Post story on Team Romney’s efforts to field a third-party alternative which would break the GOP in pieces and put the Clintons back in the White House identified Sasse along with John Kasich as figures targeted by the #NeverTrump movement. RNC Chairman Reince Priebus responded to the report that it would be a “suicide mission” for the party. According to a CNN report “RNC chairman: Third-party run would be a ‘suicide mission’”:
Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus says a third-party presidential campaign against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton would be a “suicide mission.”
“They can try to hijack another party and get on the ballot, but, look, it’s a suicide mission for our country because what it means is that you’re throwing down not just eight years of the White House but potentially 100 years on the Supreme Court and wrecking this country for many generations,” Priebus said on “Fox News Sunday,” anticipating that a conservative third-party candidate would split the Republican vote and ensure a Democrat wins the White House.
But with Romney and Kristol it isn’t about the party nor the country, it is about one thing only – their enormous egos and they would sooner inflict the political equivalent of the bubonic plague on all of us by blocking the only legitimate chance at preventing the Clinton restoration.
