As the old saying goes, the higher that a baboon climbs up a tree, the more that it shows it’s ass. Such is the case for Never Trumper Erick Erickson who bet the house on being able to lead the anti-Trump opposition and emerge as a kingmaker but is now on the precipice of shame and disgrace as well as diminished future influence in conservative media. The czar of the hugely popular establishment Republican website Red State had tried to put an early dagger in Trump’s bid when he disinvited the billionaire from the big Red State Gathering last summer over the great Megyn Kelly vaginal blood flow controversy. Trump wasn’t phased and the rest is history. Now, with his credibility on the line, Erickson has been reduced to begging for Mitt Romney to run as a third party challenger.

According to Politico “Erick Erickson: ‘I think the time has come for Mitt Romney'”:

Not only does Erick Erickson want Mitt Romney to restart a search for a third-party candidate to challenge Donald Trump, he also wants Romney to consider being that person.

The conservative blogger wrote for The Resurgent on Friday that he would “gladly work for a Romney Presidency given the choices between” Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton and Trump.

Erickson, who has said he would never vote for Trump, opposed Romney during his previous presidential runs. On Wednesday, Yahoo News reported that Romney has ruled out an independent bid for president and is not trying to get any other Republicans to take up the mantle despite remaining hopeful for someone else to surface.

“I opposed Romney in 2008 and 2012, but I think the time has come for Mitt Romney,” Erickson wrote. “I can’t believe I’m even writing this. But seriously, Mitt Romney should run for President again and transcend party for the good of the country.”

Romney has also refused to back the presumptive Republican nominee, attacking Trump for refusing to release his tax returns and previously saying “Trumpism has become associated with racism, misogyny, bigotry, xenophobia, vulgarity and, most recently, threats and violence.

Erickson may as well be working for Team Hillary and perhaps he is, many are on record as saying they would back her over Trump and a third party challenger would siphon enough votes to restore the Clintons to the throne. If Erickson could broker such a kick in the crotch to America there is no doubt that he would be handsomely rewarded and he knows it.

The cry for Romney’s help comes at a such a time that it’s a head-scratcher. Mitt slinked off with his tail between his legs earlier this week after numerous big names turned down his group’s pleas to be the anti-Trump. The former liberal governor of Massachusetts may have finally had enough humiliation but as he has repeatedly shown, there are no bounds to his egomaniacal need for attention. There is that Mormon “White Horse Prophecy” thing as well and perhaps that is what will drive Mitt if he heeds the call to ride to Erickson’s rescue as the kamikaze pilot to sink the USS Trump. It probably won’t happen though, as pointed out by Pat Buchanan earlier this week in his column “Is Mitt on a Suicide Mission?”, Romney lacks the guts to do his own dirty work.
