Longtime Bill and Hillary Clinton crony Terry McAuliffe is under federal investigation. McAuliffe, who was able to parlay his political influence into his latest gig as Governor of Virginia, is being probed over campaign finance violations. He is the latest public figure to make the news over what could be illicit loot from the Clinton Global Initiative and comes at a bad time with Hillary already embroiled in a two front war with Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders and facing declining poll numbers. The association with McAuliffe and the Clinton Global Initiative will only serve to bolster the perception that she is untrustworthy.
Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the FBI and prosecutors from the Justice Department’s public integrity unit, U.S. officials briefed on the probe say.
The investigation dates to at least last year and has focused, at least in part, on whether donations to his gubernatorial campaign violated the law, the officials said.
McAuliffe wasn’t notified by investigators that he is a target of the probe, according to the officials.
“The Governor will certainly cooperate with the government if he is contacted about it,” said Marc Elias, attorney for McAuliffe campaign, in a statement to CNN.
As part of the probe, the officials said, investigators have scrutinized McAuliffe’s time as a board member of the Clinton Global Initiative, a vehicle of the charitable foundation set up by former President Bill Clinton.
Governor McAuliffe previously served as Chairman of the money laundering and influence peddling clearinghouse that is the DNC and has long been an intimate of the Clinton crime family. He also raised eyebrows earlier this year when he restored voting rights to over 200,000 felons – the majority of them black – in a blatant thumb on the scale for Hillary. Republicans are now suing to have McAuliffe’s felon chicanery reversed although it’s a long time until November and it’s entirely possible that he will be frog-marched out of the governor’s mansion in handcuffs by the FBI by then.
He is the second governor of Virginia to face federal scrutiny, his predecessor Bob McDonnell was convicted on corruption charges and his case is now pending appeal.
